I find elements of Stephen Mitchell’s translation to be insightful and I think it would be better served with less of the “He / She / Him / Her” switching. As Mitchell explains in his forward, there is no description in the Chinese for these sexual distinctions, so I am at a loss why he felt it needed to be clarified. If it was to welcome both sexes to the writings, this is not required. The Tao Te Ching makes no distinction of sexuality because it is not necessary to do so. IMHO I find the pure path clouded by this, otherwise I like his translation.
